Featured Auction Item #2: Spirit of Detroit
Miniature (Limited Edition)
Limited Edition "Spirit of Detroit" Miniature by Carl Nielbock and C.A.N. Art Handworks, Inc.
European artisan Carl A. Nielbock, founder of C.A.N. Art Handworks, Inc., specializes in the rare art of
architectural and ornamental metal hand crafting. A student of the art of architectural and ornamental
metal since the age of fourteen, Mr. Nielbock learned his skills from monks who ran the school he
attended in Germany. He's been a metalsmith for 26 years and likes to think of his work as "jewelry
for the home." In his effort to revive the lost art of ornamental metal hand crafting utilizing the
ancient techniques of the old world masters, Carl Nielbock and his apprentices specialize in performing
historical restorations and private home embellishments. C.A.N. Art Handworks, Inc. achievements are
found at local historical landmarks including the Fisher Building, the Henry Ford Estate, the Detroit
Athletic Club, Little Caesar's Fox Center, Ameritech's Michigan Bell Building, as well as a host of
projects for private homes in Grosse Pointe, Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, Chicago and Manhattan. At
each site, authentic restoration and recreation of metal ornamentation was achieved through the
implementation of an all but lost, hand metal crafting. In July 2003 C.A.N. Art Handworks, Inc. was
contracted by the Detroit-Wayne Building Authority to restore the guild surfaces of the Spirit of
Detroit. These craftsmen created this miniature version of the Spirit of Detroit in order to study
various restoration techniques, patina finish and visual impact. In 2006, C.A.N. Art Handworks, Inc.
was a Silver & Bronze Award Winner of the National Ornamental & Miscellaneous Metal Association.

Six Rivers Regional Land Conservancy
Six Rivers Regional Land Conservancy works with both public and private landowners to protect
land through conservation easements and other methods. We follow up by carefully managing the
land we protect, ensuring that the our conservation work is not only at the best professional
level but that it contributes to the quality of the communities we serve. Our educational programs
and stewardship days help children and adults learn to be better stewards of the land they care about.
All of these efforts are conducted within the framework of a green infrastructure vision
that is developed in collaboration with the communities where we work. Green infrastructure is
defined as a system of interconnected open space that preserves natural systems and water quality
and provides benefit to human populations.
We conserve and care for land in Oakland, Macomb, Lapeer and Genesee Counties and within
the watersheds of the Huron, Flint, Shiawassee, Rouge, Belle and Clinton Rivers. We currently
conserve approximately 1,154 acres, which includes 163 acres in six nature preserves, 771 acres
in sixteen conservation easements and an additional 220 acres through seven stewardship partnerships.
Detailed descriptions of our protected lands and programs are available on this website and in
our Annual Report.
